Even traveling at the speed of light it would take 2 million years to reach the nearest “spiral” galaxy, Andromeda. The closest galaxy to the Milky Way is the Canis Major dwarf galaxy which is an irregular one. It is approximately 25,000 light years away from us so traveling at the speed of light is futile! The closest star to the Earth other than the sun is Alpha Centauri and it is 4.3 light years away. Sometimes, Proxima Centauri, a part of the triple star system along with Alpha Centauri, is also referred to as the closest star to us other than the sun. At a maximum speed of about 17,600 mph (about 28,300 kph), it would take the space shuttle, for example, about 165,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri! This explains the vastness of the universe in which we live!
