On July 4, 2012, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, announced that they have found the elusive Higgs boson or a particle consistent with the Higgs boson. The national and the international media also showed a lot of interest in this discovery because of the name God Particle that Nobel-prize winning physicist Leon Lederman gave to the Higgs boson. It was then the subject of every conversation everywhere. But now here (Kathmandu, where the writer is based) people seem to have forgotten about the Higgs boson without even knowing about it!
To clear the air about what a Higgs boson really is and the background of its discovery, National Academy of Physics (NAP) is organizing a One Day Seminar on the Discovery of Higgs Boson on October 15, 2012, Monday at Patan Multiple Campus, Lalitpur. Prof. Dr. Udayraj Khanal, one of the most renowned physicist of Nepal, will be delivering the talk on the subject, says NAP in its website.
Programs of this kind will certainly bring the curious and enthusiastic students together with the appropriate resource persons. This is a good program for the students, teachers, physics enthusiasts and to the entire physics community.
I will write about the event after I attend it. But for now, as a student of physics, I’m eagerly waiting for October 15.
